”most / most of” 都是指「大部份」。
例句
Most pets died in the house fire.
大部份寵物在火災中死去。
Most of the people living in this district are poor.
大部份在這地區住的人都是窮人。
most 與 most of 的分別
為何偶爾會在”most” 和名詞之間加上一個前置詞”of”？
第一句 Most animals 是指大部份的寵物在家居火災中死亡。由於句子中的名詞 animals 之前沒有其他的字詞，所以 most 可直接加在 people 之前。
第二句 Most of the people 中，由於名詞 people 前面已有一冠詞(article) the，當我們使用most 時，便必須要加上 of ，然後才能加上 the people了。除了冠詞外，若名詞之前有指示形容詞 (demonstrative adjective，例如this、that、these、those)、所有格形容詞 (possessives，例如 my, his, her, your) 或代名詞 (pronoun，如his, her, my, our, your)，我們也要先加上 most of ，才能正確地連結 most 和名詞。
