Apostrophe 「 ‘ 」有兩個主要功能：一，表逹擁有權 (possession)；二，表示已被省略的字母 (contraction)，例如 can’t、won’t、he’s、we’re等等。這裏集中解釋第一種用法。
表逹擁有權 (possession)
單數名詞 (singular noun)
當我們要表逹物品誰屬時，我們會習慣在單數名詞 (singular noun) 後面加「’s」，例如：
This is Jacky’s phone.
這是 Jacky 的電話。
Stephanie’s child is seven years old now.
Stephanie 的孩子現在7歲。
複數名詞 (plural noun)
用複數名詞(plural noun)時，往往會只加「’」，例如：
My grandparents’ house is very small.
我的祖父母的房子很小。
Students’ homework is done.
學生們的功課已完成。
留意，若複數名詞的字尾沒有’s’, 如children, men 等情況，我們仍然要用「’s」，例如：
People’s desire for wealth hasn’t been changed.
人們財富的渴望沒有改變。
這句中，people 是複數，但由於字尾本身沒有「s」；故當用Apostrophe (‘) ，仍要加上「‘s」。
