英文會偶然混雜了一些拉丁語，etc. 和 i.e. 都是其中之一。
etc.
意思
“etc.” 全寫是 et cetera，有「等等」的意思。
例子
I like snacks, such as chocolates, chips, cupcakes, etc.
我喜歡零食，例如朱古力、薯片、紙杯蛋榚等等。
Caden likes table tennis, tennis, badmintons, etc.
Caden 喜歡乒乓球、網球、羽毛球之類的活動。
從上述的例子可看到， “etc.” 往往用以表示一切和早前所講相關或性質相同的事情或事物。以第一組句子為例，etc 代表了和「朱古力、薯片、紙杯蛋榚」等相似的其他零食。第二組句子中， etc 代表了和「 乒乓球、網球、羽毛球」等相似的其他球類活動。所以，只有在例子的性質相同的情況下，才可以 etc 省略餘下的例子。
i.e.
意思
“i.e.” 全寫是 id est，有「即是」的意思。
用法
The island is closed during typhoon season, i.e. from August to October.
那個島在颱風季節閉關的，即在八月至十月時閉關。
The news reported that the legislative council had given the green light to the renovation of the buildings (i.e. the plan was approved).
新聞報道指，立法會已通過那個大廈的翻新工程 (即是那個翻新工程已獲得通過)。
從上述的例子可見，”i.e.” 有解釋已提及的事情的作用。 第一組句子用 i.e. 解釋八月至十月 (from August to October)，正正是句子上半部份所講的風季 (typhoon season)；第二組句子中， i.e. 後的句子「已獲得通過的翻新工程 (the plan was approved)」，正正是用以解釋 i.e. 前的「工程」到底是哪一個工程。
